Isamu Noguchi: Archaic / Modern
Typeface and Identity

How might typography reflect Isamu Noguchi’s scuplture?

Under the direction of Antonio Alcalá, I created a sans-serif capital alphabet for an exhibition of the 20th-Century sculptor, Isamu Noguchi at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The angled terminals to the top of each stroke to echo Noguchi’s dynamic forms in chiseled stone. (I like the nickname the typeface earned around the studio: “Noguchisel.”)

Using Today Sans as a starting point, we created a full alphabet of captals for use within the exhibition and catalog.
