Scene from Her

How can type and animation visualize the emotions of the spoken word?

I created an animation to accompany an audio clip from a scene from Spike Jonze’s 2013 film, Her. In the scene, Theodore Twombly asks Samantha, his computer OS (whom he has fallen in love with) why she’s leaving him. Samantha compares their relationship to “reading a book,” creating a visual starting place: opening a book. As she explains her motivations for breaking up, her language remains vivid but is increasingly abstract, allowing me to deconstruct the book into typography and colors.
